This web page refers to our older busTRACE 8.0. Click here for details on our latest busTRACE version.

When running busTRACE 8.0, and you have an Internet connection, simply go to the "Check for Product Updates..." option to automatically update your software to the latest version. If your system does not have an Internet connection, you will need to manually download the update and copy it onto your flash drive.

busTRACE 8.0.057 - May 4, 2010

Bug Fixes

  • busTRACE: When capturing 64-bit SCSI Pass Through IOCTLs (doesn't affect 32-bit) on an x64 version of Windows, with small data buffers, the wrong data might be captured. This has been fixed.

busTRACE 8.0.055 - January 12, 2010

Product Enhancements

  • busTRACE: For the Basic Edition of busTRACE 8.0, we have now enabled its ability to create busTRACE capture clients as well as read capture files created by busTRACE capture clients.

CDB Database Enhancements

  • Hard Drives: Fixed a typo in the Format CDB parameters list header. We were showing previously POV instead of FOV.

busTRACE 8.0.053 - October 23, 2009

Product Enhancements

  • busTRACE: When capturing IOCTL_ATA_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT, we will now capture the data buffer and append it to the IOCTL data in/out buffer in the Raw Data view. In a future version, the actual data buffer will be shown separately.

CDB Database Enhancements

  • Hard Drives: If a drive is sent a Verify CDB with the BytChk bit set to one, we were incorrectly flagging it as a software defect if data out submitted along with the CDB. This has been fixed.

Bug Fixes

  • busTRACE: If you have CDB Filtering enabled, and a SCSI Pass Through Direct IOCTL has a CDB which is filtered out, there was the possbility of a DRIVER_LEFT_LOCKED_PAGES_IN_PROCESS blue screen crash. This has been fixed.

busTRACE 8.0.051 - September 11, 2009

CDB Database Enhancements

  • All Devices: Added decoding support for the "Allow Commands" field in the Persistent Reserve In parameter data for Report Capabilities.
  • All Devices: Added firmware defect checks for the "Relative Port Identifier" or the "Relative Target Port Identifier" as detailed below:
    • If the Relative Target Port Identifier within the Device Identification VPD page is zero, we will flag this as a firmware bug (zero is a reserved port value).
    • If the Relative Port Identifier within the SCSI Port Designation Descriptor (SCSI Ports VPD page) is zero, we will flag this as a firmware bug (zero is a reserved port value).
    • If the Relative Target Port Identifier is zero and the ALL_TG_PT bit is zero within the Persistent Reserve In Full Status Descriptor, we will flag this as a firmware bug (zero is a reserved port value).
    • If the Relative Target Port Identifier of the Persistent Reserve Out with Register and Move is zero, we will flag this as a firmware bug (zero is a reserved port value).
    • If the Relative Target Port Identifier is zero, within the Target Port Descriptor, which is within the Target Port Group Descriptor, which is returned by the Report Target Port Groups CDB, we will flag this as a firmware bug (zero is a reserved port value).
  • All Devices: Enhanced our decoding of the TRANSPORTID field within the Persistent Reserve In full status descriptor. Special case the SAS Serial SCSI Protocol TransportID format to decode the full SAS Address.
  • All Devices: In decoding the Persistent Reserve In Full Status Descriptor, if the R_HOLDER bit is zero, we will now just show the hex values for the SCOPE and TYPE fields. If the R_HOLDER bit is one, we'll decode these two fields as before.
  • All Devices: Added the latest t10 Inquiry version descriptor values.
  • All Devices: Added the latest sense code definitions. These include:
    • Logical unit not ready, space allocation in progress
    • Logical unit not ready, robotics disabled
    • Logical unit not ready, configuration required
    • Logical unit not ready, calibration required
    • Logical unit not ready, a door is open
    • Logical unit not ready, operating in sequential mode
    • Cleaning volume expired
    • Thin provisioning soft threshold reached
    • Connection lost
  • All Devices: Added the latest IEEE OUI company identifiers.
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: Added decoding support for V2 of the Removable Medium Feature Descriptor. This version adds the DBML bit. The Device Busy Class event of Medium Loading/unloading (DBML) bit, when set to one, indicates that the logical unit generates Device Busy Class event at the medium loading/unloading that are not caused by a command from the host.
  • Hard Drives: Enhanced our decoding of the Background Scan Results log page (Page Code 15h). Instead of just decoding the Background Scan Status parameter, we now decode any Background Scan parameters (Parameter Code 0001h-0800h). This includes decoding the Accumulated Power on Minutes, Reassign Status, Sense Key, Sense Code, and Logical Block Address.

Bug Fixes

  • busTRACE: Only with "Extended IRP Capture" enabled, we were seeing the possibility for a driver crash. This has been fixed.
  • busSCRIPT: If you abort a script, during a "Pause Script" node, the application might not be able to abort properly. This has been fixed.

busTRACE 8.0.049 - July 30, 2009

CDB Database Enhancements

  • All Devices: For devices that return the SCSI Ports Inquiry VPD page, we now perform additional decoding of the "Relative Port Identifier" field. If we see a value of 1h, we now report this as "Relative port 1, historically known as port A." If we see a value of 2h, we now report this as "Relative port 2, historically known as port B."
  • All Devices: Per the latest SPC-4 draft specification, we have added decoding of the Page Code and Sub-Page Code fields in the Log Select CDB.
  • All Devices: Per the latest SPC-4 draft specification, we have added decoding of the Sub-Page Code fields in the Log Sense CDB.
  • All Devices: Per the latest SPC-4 draft specification, added decoding support for the DS, SPF, and SUBPAGE CODE fields in the Log page format header.
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: Added decoding support for the RDC bit at bit 4 offset 4 of the version 2 AACS Feature Descriptor. If the logical unit supports reading the Drive Certificate of the logical unit by REPORT KEY Command (with Key Format 111000b, Key Class 02h), the Read Drive Certificate (RDC) bit shall be set to 1b. Otherwise, it shall be set to 0b.

Bug Fixes

  • busCHECK: Fixed a potential crash on application startup.

busTRACE 8.0.047 - June 15, 2009

Product Enhancements

  • busTRACE: If you right click on a device icon, in the I/O Capture List, you can choose to have any I/Os processed by that device filtered from view with a single click. With this update, we have added an option to filter all other devices and only show I/O activity going to the selected device.

Bug Fixes

  • busTRACE: Fixed a potential crash in the busTRACE kernel driver.

busTRACE 8.0.045 - June 4, 2009

Product Enhancements

  • busTRACE: In the "Filtered Commands / Devices " dialog options, you can now select multiple items in the device tree. Either by pressing Shift-Select or dragging a selection rectangle over the items you want to select. Once the items are selected, you can enable/disable the filter on any device and that setting will be copied onto all of the selected devices.
  • busTRACE: Added a few more IOCTL strings to our IOCTL lookup tables including IOCTL_MINIPORT_PROCESS_SERVICE_IRP, IOCTL_MPIO_PASS_THROUGH_PATH, and IOCTL_MPIO_PASS_THROUGH_PATH_DIRECT.

CDB Database Enhancements

  • All Devices: If a device ignores the DESC bit in the Request Sense CDB, we previously flagged this as a firmware bug since it was not behaving properly according to the SPC-4 specification. Based on the recent agreement at the May CAP working group, busTRACE will no longer flag this as a firmware bug but simply with a warning. Ideally, as specified in SPC-4, the device should return an Invalid Field in CDB check condition. For Type 5 optical drives, no warning is given since MMC-6 specifically states that the DESC bit should be ignored by the firmware.
  • Hard Drives: Fixed a bug that caused us to incorrectly decode the reserved field to the left of the "RPL" field in the Rigid Disk Geometry mode page.

busTRACE 8.0.043 - May 1, 2009

Product Enhancements

  • Predefined Executable CDBs: Added additional predefined CDBs available for type Blu Ray Drives:
    • Read Disc Structure - 30h - Physical Access Control Structure (PAC) - All PAC Headers
    • Read Disc Structure - 30h - Physical Access Control Structure (PAC) - All PAC IDs
    • Read Disc Structure - 30h - Physical Access Control Structure (PAC) - Primary PAC - PRM
  • busTRACE: If busTRACE is configured to show device drive letters, and if you have hundreds of devices, it may take some time for busTRACE to enumerate the used drive letters. With this update, the performance has been significantly improved.
  • busTRACE: In the "Capture Devices" docked pane, you can now select multiple items in the device tree. Either by pressing Shift-Select or dragging a selection rectangle over the items you want to select. Once the items are selected, you can enable/disable capture on any device and that setting will be copied onto all of the selected devices. This is a quick way to enable/disable capture across a range of capture devices.
  • busCHECK: Read Disc Structure, Format Code 30h, can be used to enumerate the Physical Access Control (PAC) clusters from BD media. When the PAC ID and Format Number are both zero, the drive is supposed to return a list of the headers of all PACs that are written on the currently mounted disc. MMC is not specific, however, on what to return when no PACs are present (e.g. blank BD-R media). Previously, when busCHECK looked for firmware bugs in this area, it went by the standard set by the initial BluRay drives. However, now different vendors return different results so we have relaxed our checks in this area.
  • busSCRIPT: A new option has been added to the Message Box script node. You can now choose to have the Message Box display no user prompt. This can be useful if you simply want to insert messages into the busTRACE capture buffer without requiring any user prompt.
  • busSTRESS: Under the "Examine File" feature, you can view the hex / ASCII contents of any file of any size on your system. You can also search the file for any hex or ASCII match. With this update, we now allow you to scan for Unicode text. Select the "Unicode search" checkbox in the "Find Matching Data" dialog box.
  • Guid Explorer: Minor enhancements such as recognizing additional Interface GUIDs.
  • Vista: Applications have been updated to use the Vista File Open/Save common dialog box.

CDB Database Enhancements

  • All Devices: Updated our decoding of the Protocol Specific Port log page for SAS-2 devices.
    • Added decoding for the "Generation Code" field in the log parameter header. This field precedes the "Number of Phys" field.
    • Added decoding support for a SAS "Negotiated Physical Link Rate" value of 0Ah which indicates G3 - 6.0 Gbps.
    • Added decoding support for the SAS-2 log descriptor. This includes newly defined fields such as the SAS Phy Log Descriptor Length, Attached Reason, Reason, Negotiated Logical Link Rate, Phy Event Descriptor Length, and the Number of Phy Event Descriptors.
  • All Devices: Updated our decoding of the Protocol Specific Port mode page for SAS-2 devices. This includes adding decoding support for the "Continue AWT" bit flag and the "Reject to Open Limit" field.
  • All Devices: When decoding any IEEE COMPANY_ID values (OUI), we have synchronized our database to the latest list of OUI values as available on the IEEE web site.
  • All Devices: Added the latest Sense Code values as defined by the t10 committees. These include the following Sense Codes:
    • Logical unit not ready, space allocation in process
    • Warning - Power loss expected
    • Miscompare verify of unmapped LBA
    • Space allocation failed write protect
    • Idle_b condition activated by timer
    • Idle_b condition activated by command
    • Idle_c condition activated by timer
    • Idle_c condition activated by command
    • Standby_y condition activated by timer
    • Standby_y condition activated by command
  • All Devices: Added the latest t10 Inquiry version descriptor values.
  • All Devices: When a CDB fails with a check condition, and there is outbound data (e.g. Mode Select), we were now always showing you the data out in our CDB decoding. This has been fixed.
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: busCHECK expects a BluRay drive to return a specific check condition when enumerating AACS information from a blank BD-R disc (an invalid condition but one we test against). Since various drive vendors return different check condition values, we now allow several check conditions which will not get flagged as firmware bugs.
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: Enhanced our decoding of the Physical Access Control (PAC) structures / clusters. These structures are enumerated using Format Code 30h, Read Disc Structure, for BluRay drives. We now decode the PAC ID, PAC Format Number, PAC Update Count, Unknown PAC Rules, Unknown PAC Entire Disc Flags, and more.

Bug Fixes

  • busSCRIPT: The default method of creating an executable script is to create it as a ZIP file. You can optionally configure it to save it to an EXE file. When you choose the EXE option, a few files were being left behind in your TEMP folder after the executable script runs. This has been fixed.
  • busSTRESS: Our "Examine File" option brings up a hex editor and allows you to examine any data file on your system of any size. When dealing with large files, the program could crash when you search the data buffer for a specific hex or text match. This has been fixed.

busTRACE 8.0.041 - March 24, 2009

Product Enhancements

  • All Products: Update our application digital certificate to use a better supported certificate from Verisign.

CDB Database Enhancements

  • All Devices: Per the latest SPC-4 specification, changed a Reserved field to a Protocol specific mode parameters field. This was done for Page Code 18h (Protocol Specific Logical Unit mode page) and for Page Code 19h (Protocol Specific Port mode page).
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: Minor adjustments in calculating the 'x' speed factor for BluRay drives.
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: Added decoding support for the proposed v2 AACS Feature Descriptor (Feature COde = 010Dh). This version defines the RMC flag. The Media Key Block of CPRM (RMC) bit indicates if the Drive supports Media Key Block of CPRM of READ DISC STRUCURE Command.

Bug Fixes

  • busCHECK: Fixed a bug that could cause incorrect bug reports to be reported on some Read Disc Information tests.

busTRACE 8.0.039 - February 2, 2009

Product Enhancements

  • busTRACE: Added additional miniport driver "Check Transfer Length" defect checks.
  • busTRACE: Added ability to have busTRACE abort processing captured I/O activity while live capture analysis is disabled (i.e. during the stopping of the capture process).
  • busPROBE: Added a new "Reset Bus" menu item to go along with our "Reset Device" menu item.
  • busPROBE: Increased the number of times you can loop on a single CDB from 100,000 to 1,000,000.
  • Utilities: Upgraded our included "GUID Explorer" utility to version 2.0 with significant feature enhancements.

CDB Database Enhancements

  • All Devices: When decoding any IEEE COMPANY_ID values (OUI), we have synchronized our database to the latest list of OUI values as available on the IEEE web site.
  • All Devices: Updated our decoding of the SPOUT - Initialize CDB for IEEE 1667 devices.
  • SAS Devices: We now decode bit 4 of offset 2 of the Protocol Specific Logical Unit mode page for SAS SSP as the Transport Layer Retries bit. This bit is defined for Protocol Identifier 6h (i.e. SAS).

Bug Fixes

  • busTRACE: If you are performing a remote capture, with live capture analysis disabled, and the remote TCP/IP connection is lost during the capture, busTRACE could get into a state where it is unable to stop the capture. This has been fixed.

busTRACE 8.0.037 - December 4, 2008

Product Enhancements

  • busTRACE: Added the ability to import Finisar Bus Doctor ATAPI states capture file (i.e. text file). This feature allows you to use the advanced analysis feature of busTRACE while analyzing a capture file created by a 3rd party hardware bus analyzer.
  • busTRACE: When you right click on an I/O, you can choose to filter that command from view (e.g. Filter all Test Unit Ready CDBs from view). With this update, we have added a new "Filter All Except" context menu item. This allows you to filter ALL commands from view except for the one you have selected.
  • busTRACE: When multiple I/Os are selected in the I/O Capture List, you can select the Properties option to retrieve details on the selected I/Os. With this update, we now show you the average execution time and median execution time for each captured I/O type.
  • busTRACE: If you try to save the captured I/O activity to file, and the capture is currently active, busTRACE would tell you that you needed to stop the capture process before saving to file. With this update, you are provided an option during the save process to have busTRACE stop the capture for you.
  • busTRACE: Removed our disabling of the Nero emulation API. A hidden registry key is available if you want to re-enable this feature. Please contact us for assistance.
  • busTRACE: Improved the method we use to determine whether a device actually transferred data or not. These checks are needed to work around miniport drivers that do not accurately return the number of bytes actually transferred.
  • busTRACE: When loading a capture file, we previously started by showing you the end of the capture list. With this update, we now default to showing you the start of the captured I/Os in the I/O Capture List.

CDB Database Enhancements

  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: Updated our decoding of the v0 BD Read Feature Descriptor (0040h) to match the new format found in the V1 descriptor (as defined in MMC-6 and the Blu-ray Disc Multi-Media Command Set Proposal for INCITS).
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: Updated our decoding of the v0 BD Write Feature Descriptor (0041h) to match the latest MMC-6 draft specification. We have also removed our v1 definition as no such version is yet defined.

busTRACE 8.0.035 - November 12, 2008

Product Enhancements

  • busTRACE: Minor improvements handling SRB_FUNCTION_IO_CONTROL SRB requests.
  • busTRACE: Minor improvements in capturing SCSI Pass Through IOCTLs.
  • busTRACE: For certain types of busTRACE capture files, improved the speed in reading the files into memory.
  • busTRACE: By default, busTRACE filters any SRB_STATUS_DATA_OVERRUN result and treats it as a non-error. You can alter this behavior from the Tools->Options->I/O Handling page. This status code is used for both an underrun and an overrun. With this update, we will try and determine if it's an overrun. If we are able to determine that it is an overrun, we will now always treat this as an error. Only underruns can now be filtered out as non-errors.
  • busPROBE: Minor improvements to handle driver / device firmware bugs that do not properly return device information to our application.
  • busCHECK: Minor improvements in handling miniport drivers that do not properly return simulated check condition data for Read Defect Data 10 and Read Defect Data 12.

CDB Database Enhancements

  • All Devices: We often see devices that do not properly handle Inquiry VPD (Vital Product Data) requests. With this update, we have made minor improvements in detecting and handling these firmware defects.
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: Added decoding support for version 1 of the BD Write Feature Descriptor (as defined in MMC-6). Enhanced our decoding of version 1 of the BD Read Feature Descriptor.
  • CD/DVD/BD Devices: When security protocol 06h is submitted (Security Protocol In / Security Protocol Out), we will now show this as the "Optical Security Subsystem Class."

Bug Fixes

  • busTRACE: If you press Ctrl+R during a capture, you are telling busTRACE to throw away any previously captured data and restart the capture. Prior to this fix, this restart would cause our defect analysis to occur before the data was discarded. With this update, we no longer perform the defect analysis as it is not necessary.

busTRACE 8.0.033 - October 16, 2008

Product Enhancements

  • busTRACE and busPROBE: In the Data Structures tab, you can right click and choose the "Copy" menu item to copy the tree to the clipboard in text format. With this update, you can copy only the left-most columns that interest you.
